About the Project
Over 300 years ago, enslaved Africans sought freedom from their British captors by fleeing southward to the Spanish territory of St. Augustine. They created the original ‘underground railroad’ which led them to Fort Mose—the site of the first free black community in the United States.
Many years later in 1763, Spain ceded Florida to England and the residents of Fort Mose fled to the safety of Spanish Cuba to escape enslavement once again. Because of Florida’s wetlands, the abandoned fort was swallowed by marsh and swamp and the legacy of courage and freedom vanished with it.
In the late twentieth century, archaeologists, historians, government leaders, and local citizens worked to uncover and restore the history of Fort Mose. Today, Fort Mose is recognized as a significant local, national, and international historic landmark. Scott System is proud to have contributed to the reconstruction and restoration of Fort Mose in St. Augustine, FL—America’s “First Site of Freedom.”
Scope of Work
Our custom plastic formliner and backing solution for the Palisades Walls recreates the historic palisades design, simulating high vertical tree trunk-like elements to secure the perimeter which was once protected and defended by the free black militia.
