Situated between Sanibel Island and Naples along Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Ritz-Carlton Residences Estero Bay sets a standard for luxury residential architecture in one of the region’s most coveted coastal corridors. The building’s ground-level presence is defined in part by three 24-foot-tall Y-columns, each spanning 12 feet wide — structural elements that also carry significant architectural weight.
The columns were designed to appear visually unique from one another while maintaining the efficiency and precision that a project of this caliber demands. Scott System partnered with Allen Concrete & Masonry Inc. to engineer the formwork system that made both of those requirements achievable simultaneously.
Y-columns present complex geometry that conventional wood or steel formwork handles poorly. Wood creates seams at every transition, while steel requires costly, custom fabrication. Furthermore, projects requiring multiple visually distinct columns typically demand separate form sets, significantly increasing project costs. The Ritz-Carlton Estero Bay required three distinct columns while controlling costs. Rather than three separate form sets, Scott System engineered a single set designed for multiple configurations.
While each column appears unique to reflect the brand’s craftsmanship, their consistent underlying geometry allowed Scott System to utilize a high-efficiency formwork strategy.
Scott System engineered a single set of EPS foam column formwork designed to be rotated and flipped between casts. Each repositioning produced a column that appeared visually distinct from the previous one, satisfying the architect’s aesthetic specifications without requiring a separate form set for each pour.
Y-column geometry requires forming materials that handle compound angles and branching surfaces without seams. Scott System’s large-format CNC-milled EPS foam achieves this more effectively than wood or steel. Planar materials like wood and steel require numerous joints or expensive custom fabrication for curved surfaces. These traditional methods are less compatible with the rotate-and-flip reuse strategy that optimized the Estero Bay project’s budget. Conversely, EPS foam is machined to exact specifications, eliminating joints and approximation. This CAD-to-CNC workflow provides a seamless, precise solution for complex architectural challenges.

They were produced from a single set of formwork, with the cost efficiency and surface quality that precision EPS fabrication delivers.
